Gustavo Arango enchants New York Fashion Week with his premier collection.
For immediate release:
September 23, 2003, New York, NY
Gustavo Arango enchants New York Fashion Week with his premier collection.
Described as a fantasy of color and fabric, designer Gustavo Arango’s Spring 2004 collection premiered to a packed house on Monday, September 15th, 2003 at 6pm. His collection featured 47 looks such as elegant silk gowns, stunning satin pant suits and pin perfect jackets. This premier collection from the young Columbian designer, who has made his home in Puerto Rico, captured the exotic elegance of the Caribbean and the sharp sensuality of New York. Show stopping elegance embodied such magical garments as an alabaster silk cropped jacket with gathered sleeves adorned with a bronze buckle, showed with its matching wide leg pant, in addition to a stunning hand painted chiffon dress.
(Pictured below).
Adding to the elegance of the show was the glamorous jewelry of Puerto Rico’s Reinhold Jewelers, featuring the work of designers Laura Gibson, Lazare Kaplan, Mikimoto, Stephen Webster, Faraone Mennella and William Levine.
With trend setting make up by Karlo for Shu Umuera and fanciful hair by Junior Melendez for Redken 5th Avenue, Gustavo Arango’s Spring 2004 collection has earned him the distinction as fashion’s new young talent sure to take over the industry.

Observations...
Some Asked Me:Do you think the music played makes a difference in how you perceive the fashions, or the image that the designer is able to pull off?
Most definitely the image the designer is trying to pull off. At the Baby Phat, the look was sort of flapper meets 'round the way girl, and the music definitely established the theme. The show opened and closed with a 20s jazzy-swingy sound, and the catwalk presentation was all 21st century hip-hop. At the Rosa Chá and Atil Kotuglu show's, I think the music was just something to listen to besides the sound of heels clicking on the runway.

The September 13th Report
I arrived at Bryant Park for the 3 p.m. atoll Kotoglu show at 2:30 p.m. It gave me time to wander around the kiosks underneath the huge white tent in Bryant Park. Fiji Water was a major sponsor and had refrigerators with bottles all around, and they were giving them away for free. Ortha-Norva, the birth control patch, also had a kiosk, but they weren't giving away any birth control. LOL.
The Style Network had sponsored a cafe with Manhattan-priced eateries. Individual pizzas, sandwiches and wraps, and salads cost between $6 and $7. I wolfed down a chicken and garlic pizza, because it had taken nearly 15 minutes for them to make it and I had to hurry and get on line for the show. (In retrospect, I don't know why I rushed. Each fashion started 30 minutes or more late. I call it FPT: Fashion People Time. LOL.)
There were also 2 very beautiful and envy-inducing black, convertible Mercedes-Benz cars on display in the lobby. Between the two car displays, was a kiosk handing out free copies of WWD, The Daily, and other fashion rag sheets. I have definitely developed an interest in the business side of fashion, and I found myself reading the Sunday New York Times Style and Fashion section cover to cover. Did you know that Calvin Klein is retiring?
I sat in the second row for the atoll show. The runway went around the tent like a giant U, and the seats were in the middle of the U. It was almost hard to remember that I was sitting in a place that is normally park every other week of the year (aside from Fashion Week in Feb.). I felt very special to have had a seat, because many people had to stand.
I found Atil's clothing surprisingly wearable in shades of gold, silver, and dark green. He played a lot with metallic, alligator, and satin/silk fabrics. What's surprisingly about a lot of fashion on the runways is the lack of women wearing underwear. Some of us do not want to show cleavage from three different advantage points.

FASHION WEEK (END) CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS
I attended four fashion shows so far during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. I went to GenArt on Friday, and Atil Kutoglu, Rosa Cha, and Baby Phat’s shows on Saturday night. I saw Poet from Oz at the Gen Art Show. I saw Beyonce; Jay-Z, Mama Knowles; Venus Williams; Malina Williams (Soul Food); Robert Verdi (Full Frontal Fashion); Russell Simmons; Tyson Beckford; Toni Braxton (wearing a black, lace, spaghetti ballgown); Wyclef and his wife; T-Boz; Sanaa Lathan; David Copperfield; Andre Harrell; Cuba Gooding Jr.; and Ivana Trump (wearing a tight black turtleneck and a plaid, B&W mini) with her new boy toy at the Rosa Cha show. Rosa Cha has the most amazing yet obscene swimwear I have ever seen. Many of the bikinis were bottomless!
Venus Williams is an AMAZON, and she is extremely beautiful and statuesque. Venus has a 1,000-watt smile. She was very accommodating for the press. She was wearing a black halter mini-dress decorated with a few bold flowers. Beyonce sat in the same row as Venus, and the media swamped her. It was crazy. She looked frightened and I felt scared for her. Eventually, her bodyguard got the press to back off. She looked very bootylicious in her jeans and low-cut white blouse. She looked a lot shorter and prettier in person. Before sitting down, she shook hands with Venus Williams. A few moments later, dressed in a gray t-shirt and a gray baseball cap, Jay-Z made his way down the row. He also spoke with Venus Williams, and eventually sat beside Beyonce. They did not hold hands or anything that would signify them as dating.
The Baby Phat show was nice enough although I don’t really care for Kimora Lee Simmons’ fashions. The show started an hour late, and it was very unorganized when it came to letting in guests. We had to wait shoulder-to-shoulder in a packed crowd for 40 minutes to get into the show. The gift bag was filled with only one can of Def Jam energy drink. The pre-show stuff could have been organized much better. Everyone I saw at the Rosa Cha show was also at the Baby Phat show. Finola Hughes (the soap actor), Andre Leon Talley of Vogue, Naomi Campbell (who was a show stopper on the catwalk of Rosa Cha's show!), Seal, and Damon Dash were also at the show. Jay-Z sat between Beyonce and Damon. Damon wouldn’t shut up. He bent Jay-Z’s ear during the whole event. He wasn’t even a quiet talker. He gesticulates often.
Well, that’s my report for now. More thorough report of the day's events to come.

My Review of the Gen Art Show
Runway Designers
Gayle Met Glenn: Runway music was bass & drum heavy hot techno beat laced with police radio communications. The fashions feature floaty, satin numbers in pink, hot pink, cream, ivory, and white. My favorite outfit was a short sleeve, one-piece, satin, hot pants, zip-up jumper.
Lauren Felton: Runway music was hard rock. Fashions were edgy, minimalist, and cut close to body with random cutouts. There was nothing floaty here. I liked her use of the ultra-skinny, tapered pants in light materials.
Duckie Brown: The male models came out to Snoop Dogg’s hit “Beautiful” and other hip-hop inspired beats. This men’s collection featured fluorescent shirts, brightly colored skullcaps, and skinny scarves. It was hip-hop meets preppy. Pink pants, thin-layered shirts, and colorful bucket hats. http://www.duckiebrown.com
Annelore: Very feminine—soft colors, floaty skirts, satin blouses, and brocade jackets. Very fifties and sixties styled looks.
Lars Andersson: Lots of open-weave, see-through tops in silk, and floaty, handkerchief hem skirts.
Romain Kapadia: This men’s fashion line featured rough and frayed seams and hems. The styles were worn with an unkempt flair without the use of baggy clothes or looking sloppy. Lots of utilitarian pants, baseball hats, and shredded hems. http://www.romainkapadia.com
Tom Scott: LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the shoes by United Nude. They were platform shoes in graphic colors and cut out heels. The clothing line was filled with light sweaters and major uses of red & cream.
Alistar Carr: Ultra, ultra minis topped with oversized sweatshirts and hooded comfort tops. Men’s inspired shirts paired with pencil skirts.
ACCESSORIES:
Kristen Lee: Kristen Lee Shoes, http://www.kirsten-lee.com
Thorn: Jewelry made of natural objects cast in rose gold and sterling silver. http://www.thornnyc.com
GenArt Fresh Faces in Fashion 2003
GenArt Fresh Faces in Fashion 2003
Friday September 12, 2003
Manhattan Center: Grand Ballroom
First Impressions: I feel so glamorous and so guilty at the same time. Although I RSVPed, they didn’t have my name on the list. I must have looked so earnest that they let me in, because of my affiliation and that, I held an invite in my hand. The little yellow seat assignment slip they gave me, also allowed me entrance to the after party. (I chose not to attend.)
My seat is in the second row—not less than six feet away from the cat walk. My big boss was on the RSVP list, and I hope she doesn’t show up because I don’t want her to see me. (She didn’t.) I wasn’t assigned to cover this. I’m doing this of my own free will, and money. The free box of 12 Creative Nail Design nail polish in pink gift boxes on each chair more than made up for the cost.
The bag of freebies included a free copy of either Razor of Jane magazine; a leather Prescriptives case with a full-size tube of lipstick and mascara; Ecru New York Marine Styling Balm; a stuffed animal called Ugly Dolls; a pen; a beautiful, hardcover, 8.5”x11” L’oreal notebook; L’oreal Feria hair color style book; an Isaac Mizrahi for Target lollipop and flag; a Glassjaw CD-single; and a Fanny Pack CD-sampler & sticker.
I’m going to have to look more put-together than just a pair of Payless Shoe loafers and Lane Bryant jeans at subsequent fashion shows. Everyone here looks so chichi with his or her stilettos, suede boots, pink fedoras, and streamlined pants. The energy and hubbub is palatable. I wish I could have come earlier for the alcohol, because I need a drink. Lol.
The popular fashion trend among the crowd appears to be split-sleeve tops in silk and satin. I think my arms would not look too bad in them. Rumor has it that the after party is being hosted by Robert Verdi of Full Frontal Fashion.
Second Impression: I wish I could go to all of the fashion shows during fashion week. Tomorrow I’m going to the Atil Kutoglu and Rosa Cha fashion shows.

Tomorrow Fashion Week Begins
And I'm very excited. I'm more excited about getting the invites and RSVPing than I am about actually going. The joy of getting invites is fleeting and faux, but it makes me feel glamorous. But Fashion Week, if anything, is about feeling glamorous.
So far, I've only gotten a seating assignment for Gen Art on Friday night and Zang Toi for Saturday afternoon. I'm hoping that within the next day I'll get seating assignments for one of the five invites I have--mainly Baby Phat. I figure, three fashion shows is pretty good for my $40 media accredition fee. I'm still a little peeved that I had to give up my BCBG seating assignment to my co-worker who is going for work reasons.

Hip Hydration
THE TENTS MARK THEIR 10th YEAR WITH A NEW OFFICIAL WATER
FIJI Water To Pour Freely throughout Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
Viti Levu, Fiji Islands, September 8August 20, 2003 – Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week welcomes a new official water sponsor this year, as FIJI Water joins forces with “The Tents’ Tenth”. In an effort to enhance the event’s celebratory atmosphere, FIJI Water will keep all attendees hydrated throughout the week at Bryant Park. Known as ”The Taste of Paradise,” FIJI Water will be available backstage, during every show, and at a unique water bar, where the smoothly palatable water will keep the chic crowd looking and feeling great.
FIJI Water’s inaugural sponsorship of 7th on Sixth is a perfect fit, as FIJI has rapidly become the smart choice in hydration. “More and more people are drinking FIJI Water because it is exceptionally pure, soft-tasting and naturally imbued with silica, an antioxidant mineral great for hair, nails and skin,” said Doug Carlson, Chief Executive Officer for FIJI Water. “We are thrilled to recognize many trendsetters, top fitness experts and world-renowned chefs among our fans and are proud to provide FIJI Water as the perfect accessory at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.”
Noted Fern Mallis, Executive Director of 7th on Sixth: “FIJI Water is a great fit for this event. The fashion crowd is never seen without a bottle of water in their hands or tote bags, and FIJI transports us all to a beautiful and healthy place.”
FIJI Water was recently chosen as the exclusive bottled water to be free-poured at the new Sally Herschberger salon in New York City’s trendy meatpacking district. Herschberger’s high profile clientele include fashion week alumna Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford, as well as Meg Ryan, Winona Ryder, Brad Pitt, Renee Zelwegger and Julia Roberts. FIJI Water has also been selected as the official water at Susan Cimenelli’s Bergdorf Goodman Day Spa.
At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, FIJI Water 500ml bottles will be placed on seats at each show or handed to attendees upon entering. Backstage, hard-working models and crew will stay hydrated with FIJI as they prep for the catwalks. The custom-designed water bar, created by the legendary Jimi Beach, founder of Bluworld Innovations, will be the centerpiece of the Style Café, giving the crowds a chic spot to hydrate and rejuvenate.
FIJI Water is shipped direct from the Fiji Islands. Bottled at the source, this natural artesian water is known for its soft, smooth taste and superb mineral content including a high concentration of colloidal silica, a youth-preserving anti-oxidant that promotes healthy skin, hair and nails. Carbon testing proves that this underground aquifer protects rainwater that fell over 450 years ago and due to the state-of-the-art bottling process, the water does not see the light of day until the cap is removed. The expansive aquifer is located in the Yaqara Valley on the main island of Viti Levu in Fiji and is protected by 1500 miles of open Pacific Ocean from the nearest industrialized continent. FIJI Water is currently available throughout the United States and Canada.
More Invites Come and Go
Apparently, my good luck to be able to receive invites for Fashion Week has been usurped because it is preventing an actual fashion person at my job from attending. I made a deal with her to give up all other invites I may receive. It isn't so bad, because at least I get five shows out of it. She did "take" one RSVPed show away from me-- BCBG Max Azria. I'm a little bummed, but fair is fair. I'm going for fun and she is going for work.
Today, I received my seat assignment for the Zang Toi show. I have to do some research on them so I'm not totally in the dark about their fashions. I also received an invite for Betsey Johnson's show, which included a sticker that read "Boys Love BJ." lmao. That didn't offend me. However, the House of Diehl invitation did offend me. The words of the invite was just stamped on a page of the Bible (Isaiah 11:9)), and that page was torn out and mailed to me. It seemed very cult-like. These two invites will also be passed on to my co-worker.

GUSTAVO ARANGO
SPRING 2004 COLLECTION
SEPTEMBER 15, 2003
6:00 PM
MERCEDES-BENZ NEW YORK FASHION WEEK TENTS AT BRYANT PARK
For immediate release:
September 3, 2003, New York, NY
Gustavo Arango’s Spring 2004 Collection will make its New York Fashion Week debut on Monday, September 15, 2003 at 6:00pm at the Tents at Bryant Park.
Look forward to an exciting and refreshing presentation, which will be one of the highlights of the Spring 2004 season. Gustavo Arango's debut collection is a sensual balance of experimental and classic design. Joining Gustavo Arango backstage will be the stylists of Redken 5th Avenue NYC and the makeup of Shu Uemura Cosmetics.
As a young fashion designer on the move, Gustavo Arango refines the line between couture and ready to wear. His sleek and luxurious clothing graces the world’s most elegant and sophisticated women.
Gustavo Arango was born in Cali, Colombia and raised in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1989, his passion for design, fashion, and color, and a constant drive to create, took him to one of the most competitive and cosmopolitan cities in the world, New York. An outstanding student at F.I.T., he excelled from the start. Following his first job in New York as a fashion designer for Pierre Balmain in 1991, Arango launched his signature line Gustavo in 1994. His high quality and stylish women’s line of suits soon became appreciated throughout the industry for their fine detailing and caught the eye of Bill Blass, for which he currently designs an exclusive suit collection, sold in major department stores.
After the events of Sept 11th destroyed his apartment, Arango returned to his home in Puerto Rico. He restructured his collection adding gorgeously bias-cut draped dresses with luxurious fluid fabrics and unexpected pleats to his established line of impeccable jackets. This expansion transformed his collection into a brilliant and sensual fusion of design and femininity which is appreciated by women the world over. His story has truly become an example of enduring creativity and rejuvenation of the spirit of fashion.
Arango's fashions cater to the exclusive and avant-garde, which seek a special garment crafted with a flair for individuality and style. His 4,000 square foot flagship store in San Juan reflects his passion for modern, architectural lines. He continuously searches for luxury and captures the core essence of assertive and chic women.
More Invites
Today, I found nine invites to fashion shows and other invents associated with Fashion Week. Forutunately, I could attend two of them. Unfortunately, I am unable to attend seven. One was a party being sponsored by Vouge and W magazines. The other was a 2-hour fashion show and cocktail party for Lilly Pultizer. I was able to RSVP to the Baby Phat fashion show and the Atil Kutoglu fashion show.
I just wanted to add that I am a plus-sized, middle-income, part-time grad student who cannot afford any of these designers nor can I wear them. However, I have a great passion for fashion. It is my hobby to follow trends, watch runway shows, makeover shows, and read style coverage. I DO NOT pretend not to be an expert or one who travels in the designer fashion circles.

By using today's fashion-forward yet affordable gold jewelry, I can express the emotional connections gold inspires in modern day women and enhance this sexy, bold and empowered fashion collection. The modern day saint can proclaim her own style and buy her own jewelry.”

FROM: Gen Art
Gen Art’s Fresh Faces Kick Off Fashion Week
Emerging Designers from Around the World will Debut Their Collections at the Gen Art / L’Oréal Féria Fresh Faces in Fashion Show on the First Night of Spring ’04 Fashion Week
- Fresh Faces in Fashion Expands to Three Top Markets -
(New York, August 11, 2003) – Gen Art and L’Oréal Féria will unveil the brightest stars in emerging fashion talent from around the globe at Gen Art’s ninth annual Fresh Faces in Fashion show. An accessories reception at 6 PM will precede the runway show, where accessory designers will showcase their creations in custom-made installations constructed by the designers.
This is the first time in three years that Gen Art has held a Fresh Faces New York show during Fashion Week. Fresh Faces will present collections from the four accessories designers, and the runway debut for the six womenswear and two menswear designers, who will each show a mini collection of ten looks.
Gen Art is also proud to announce that, for the first time, its Fresh Faces in Fashion program will take place in the top three markets, with shows on October 30th during LA Fashion Week and on November 13th in Chicago.
Fresh Faces is where the future of fashion begins, and was the runway premiere for famed designers Zac Posen, Chaiken, Rebecca Taylor and Shoshanna among many others. Perfectly reflecting Gen Art’s mission (to support and promote the best emerging talent in the arts), the much-anticipated show reflects the state of the emerging designer world, providing cutting-edge designers the opportunity to show their looks to hundreds of key people in the fashion industry, and also to the press and consumers. Those showing on the runway this year will be fashion’s buzz next year.
The show is presented by L’Oréal Féria and is the official Hair Color of all Gen Art fashion shows in New York and Los Angeles. At the Fresh Faces in Fashion Show, L’Oréal Féria will color the hair for runway models in the designers’ shows.
The four accessories designers are:
∑ Agent Anonym - British duo Laura Shepherd and Rick Collinge run the Amsterdam-based label, Glovedup, primarily focusing on extravagant gloves, but also including other eccentric, long-forgotten accessories like garters, sashes and spats.
∑ Erva - Spanish duo Rosa Rial and Eva García live in London and create feminine, quirky leather handbags with an impulsive spirit.
∑ Kristen Lee – A former Theory ready-to-wear designer, Lee now creates classic, sexy footwear, which is heavily influenced by vintage and street styles and focuses on uniqueness and comfort.
∑ Thorn –Photographers Andrea Gentl and India D'Arthenay Adams debuted the Thorn jewelry line for the Spring 2003. Their jewelry is inspired by their strong and ceaseless ties to nature and all natural objects, for which they share a unique obsession. Thorn was worn by Lucy Lui and Cameron Diaz for the Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle campaign.
The six womenswear designers are:
∑ alistair carr – A British designer who recently graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London, Carr just won an award for design and innovation from Harrods. His collection is being shown as a result of a partnership between Gen Art and the London Centre for Fashion Enterprise, an organization which helps foster relationships between Great Britain’s young designers and the fashion industry. His collection fuses Spanish matador embroidery, motorcross suits, wet t-shirt competitions with romantic ruffles and sharp trouser silhouettes, creating a unique play on luxury.
∑ Annelore – Brazilian-born Juliana Cho designs wearable, feminine looks that are cleverly detailed and based on timeless silhouettes in sophisticated fabrics.
∑ Gayle met Glenn – Khary Septh’s fun, modern and feminine designs speak to women who see pretty and delicate clothing as powerful.
∑ Lars Andersson - Swedish designer who love the craft of knitting and the opportunities it provides for him to both design garments and make the fabric he used.
∑ Lauren Felton - New York based-designer whose jersey conceptual pieces are delicately poised between contradictions. Her asymmetrical pieces drape, fold and extend with cantilever-like use of seams and gathers. Felton worked with Maria Cornejo on her Zero label since 1998.
∑ Tom Scott - New York based-designer of hand-loomed knitwear which is elegant, yet unexpected and features intricate and unusual detail.
The two menswear designers are:
∑ Duckie Brown – Duo Steven Cox and Daniel Silver’s high-end designs, available at Barneys, Harrods and Maxfield, are inspired by photographs of African teens partying in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s, and by the handsome cricketer Imran Kahn along with childhood follies, the brilliant lights and fast rides of summer carnivals and humor. This team was a finalist in the 2003 Gen Art Styles competition.
∑ Romain Kapadia – A Texas native, and the son of Indian immigrants, Kapadia’s line of "lifewear" communicates the essence of the 21st century city dweller through its strong lines, modern silhouettes and geometric design. His creations reflect the characteristics of city life: constant motion, sensory influences and diverse cultural encounters.
